Seeing my mess

knowing it’s true.

I can’t change the mess.

But can I find someone to help me through?

Context:

A lot of my artwork and the meaning behind it stems from my experiences in 12 step addiction recovery programs. I found addiction recovery groups to be the most helpful thing for me in learning to live with my depression and anxiety. I began attending because I was looking for peace and wanted to feel the love of God and find hope in this life.

Step 4 is Truth. It’s looking through your life through the lens of honesty. Not to shame yourself or criticize yourself but more to write and notice how your actions and choices have impacted you and others.

A big part of addiction recovery is having a support person. Someone who has been through all 12 steps, who can support and help you as needed. Help you see patterns of behavior in your life. I’m thankful for my supportive friends in recovery who don’t judge or give unsolicited advice, but just listen with hearts of love. And love the sometimes ugly truth.
