In Ghana, from 1988 to 1990, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints experienced a time, known as the Freeze, when worship was outlawed by the government. During that time, William Acquah learned that another Church member had been put in jail. After the Freeze, the church experienced a great deal of growth that helped prepare the country and the Saints in Ghana for a temple. This is how Brother Acquah described his experience,
“When I went over to the police station with other priesthood holders to find out what was wrong, the officer had only one question for us: ‘Are you a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints? If you say no, you are allowed to go scot free.’ But I said yes, along with two other brethren…
When I came out on Tuesday my siblings met me in the house of my uncle and told me that, ‘We have tolerated you all these years… We don’t want you to join these people. Look at the shame you have brought onto the family. Stop attending the LDS Church.’
But I replied them, ‘Uncle, brothers, sister, I am old enough to know which church I should join. No one here can tell me where, or which church I should join. I’m going to worship with the Latter-day Saints. That’s it!’ Well, they weren’t very happy with me, yet here I am, still a member of the Church.”
