Someone suggested I begin adding to my blog again, I'm better at updating my instagram @emmaleepowellart but here I am... 8 years later apparently. Still alive and well. 3 kids, 12 years of teaching art, in my 2nd year at graduate school, 3 years attending addiction recovery meetings for learning to cope with my anxiety and depression, and finally beginning to paint again. That brings us to my current series of art titled "Where is Jesus in This Mess?" Here is a video where I describe it all in detail while I paint. https://youtu.be/fdBsPAOm3xA But if you don't want to watch the video keep reading... What if it is impossible to be perfect or create the perfect painting of Christ? To confront my “worst fears” I’ve given myself a series of limitations designed to make me fail. It sounds backwards but it’s surprisingly freeing. I begin by smearing paint however I feel and making a “big mess.” Then I rotate the paper different ways and try to find Jesus in the mess. Then using ONLY my non-dominant hand, paper towels, palette knives, and carving tools, I remove paint to reveal the face of Christ within.  My challenge for you. Choose a “big mess” in your life and find Jesus in it.
